Do’s and Dont’s: The First Impression
First impressions are everything. You’ve heard it time and time again, but that’s only because it’s the truth. You only get one chance to make a first impression and whether it’s a job interview, first date or meeting the in-laws, you have to nail it, so here are some do’s and dont’s of the vital first impression!
Tips For The First Impression
Do: Show Up On Time
If you’re early, you’re on time and if you’re on time, you’re late. Being punctual is a huge deal when it comes to meeting someone for the first time. This person is taking time out of their day or night to meet with you, and you need to make an effort to be there at the arranged time.
Don’t: Act Like You Know It All
When meeting someone for the first time, it’s important to come across as humble. Don’t assume you know everything. Ask open-ended questions, facilitate conversation and be interested in what they have to say.
Do: Put Your Phone Away
There is nothing more upsetting than being midway through a conversation with someone and a phone starts to ring or a text comes through. Whether it’s a job interview or a first date, put your phone on silent and in your pocket or bag. Your phone is a distraction and can cause you to lose focus on the person speaking to you.
Don’t: Skip The Research
This is more so for a job interview but can also be applied to other first meetings. You should come prepared to a meeting in order to be informed on what you plan to talk about. Doing preliminary research about a company or person is key to nailing the first impression, it will show the person you care enough to take an interest in them or the organization.
Do: Make a Connection
There can only be so much to small talk about with someone. When researching or chatting, find a connection. It can be as small as having the same favourite sports team or having gone to the same University. Once you make a personal connection with someone the conversation will flow much more smoothly. Lastly, a final “do” is to enjoy yourself, having a positive attitude can make any scenario enjoyable, so go out there and give it your best shot.
